Iron & Steel Memorial

If there were to be an Olympic event for the world’s ugliest piece of public art , Barrow’s monument to its iron and steel industry on the corner of Duke Street and Cavendish Street would be a strong contender for the gold medal. It’s supposed to be in the form of a book, presumably that sort of wide-format coffee-table book with lots of pictures and not too many words aimed people who aren’t too bright. And it hasn’t rusted in the Barrow climate (traditionally strong salty winds and heavy rain, although there hasn’t been much of the latter lately) – it was made that way!
