The Canteen

The ‘official’ Forum 28 arts centre in Duke Street is pretty good as these things go, and for a town as modest in size as this one, but it’s as safe and predictable as these things generally are.

But Barrow has its alternative arts scene too and one of its foci is The Canteen in Michaelson Road. It’s right there in the middle of the shipyard, which shouldn’t be too surprising given that it’s the former works canteen.

Me, I’ve never been in there. If this sort of thing were in Liverpool in the 1970s I’d not only have been there but I’d have written features about it for the student paper, but now I feel my age is an obstacle and besides, they offer too much hip-hop for my taste. Although they do show the odd good film that doesn’t get a look in at the Apollo. Maybe one day. Interesting building though, don’t you think?
