City Daily Photos Theme Day: Twin Cities

Gdansk

To the best of my knowledge, Barrow doesn’t have any twinning arrangements. If the inner circle of councillors go on jollies abroad every year, they keep it to themselves.

If Barrow were to seek such an arrangement, however, a natural candidate would be Gdansk in Poland. Barrow has a significant Polish population these days – a shipbuilding town is a natural magnet for electricians and plumbers after all – complete with at least one specialist Polish food shop (which I must cover one day soon) and small Polish sections in local supermarkets. As a polskaphile and honorary krakówka I have said for quite a while that any Pole would feel right at home in this ramshackle and fiercely independent-minded town. And what better companion could there be than fellow shipbuilders, Gdansk?

(Although Barrow proper has no twin, the town of Dalton within the local government area is twinned with Dalton, Pennsylvania, USA)

PS: Whoops, nearly forgot!

  1. I like the way you’ve suggested a sister city – and abeautiful one too. Perhaps it will happen one day!

  2. The only place I’ve been to in Poland is Gdynia which is just up the road from Gdansk. Sounds like a good choice to me.

  3. Great idea. Many creative ideas this theme day.

  4. Politically, going back to the ’80s( no I promise not to rant) your choice is ideal. I really think Barrow should look into this, I think yiu’ve genuinely hit on an excellent idea.
I am proud to say the island now has a Polish shop in Douglas. Considering how non cosmopolitan the island is(but getting there) this is quite something. We have a grwoing community of Poles here now, which too me is a good thing.

  5. Gdansk is a good pick. A lovely city with a rich heritage, just like Barrow!

  6. Halifax, NS is twinned with Hakodate, Japan!

  7. Diane, why don’t you do a City Daily Photo blog for Halifax? Sounds just your sort of thing.
