Over the entrance to Thornton’s Cafe in Portland Walk.

Many towns have a Thornton’s (for the benefit of non-Brits Thornton’s is a national chain of chocolate shops) but Barrow’s is a cafe and that seems a little surprising to me.

Thornton’s used to be a more limited chain of shops, largely confined to the Sheffield/Derbyshire/Cheshire area and better known for Special Toffee and Treacle Toffee, sold loose in paper bags. They expanded in the 1980s and went into chocolate rather than toffee in keeping withe the spirit of the age and aiming atb a more sophisticated market. This was not, in my mind, an improvement. They tried to set up in Belgium but not surprisingly they failed in competion with the best chocolate in the world. All the same, I believe – though as ever I’m open to correction – that it remains an independent company.
